Well it’s a small win but a step in the right direction. This week Percy Schmeiser, winner of last year’s Right Livelihood award and long time David to Monsanto’s Goliath, accepted an out of court settlement of $660 from the company. In 2005, one year after Monsanto sued Schmeiser for violating their patent when they found their ‘Round-up Ready’ genetically engineered Canola plant on his farm. Schmeiser fought back, saying the plants’ seeds blew onto his land. The Supreme court agreed that Monsant had the right to patent the plant (Boo!) but that Schmeiser did not get any financial gain from the plants so did not fine him damages (Yay!). So when Monsanto’s GM plants cropped up again in a fallow field 12 months later, Schmeiser went for them. He had the plants removed and sent them the bill. They said they would if he signed a release, a gag order which stopped him from discussing the terms of their agreement publically. He refused and took the giant to small claims court. Three years later, amidst invitations to speak at Universities around the world and a Right Livelihood award under his belt, Monsanto finally relented.
“This is a great victory for farmers all over the world”, he said. “Now they have at least an opportunity to have some recourse on a corporation when they are contaminated.”

Monsanto - the most evil corporation in the world. I say that without a hint of hyperbole. They truly are, and any win against them is a triumph. From little things, big things grow.

This 2006 article is very interesting as it’s by a guy who actually believed in and worked for Monsanto, but ended up disillusioned, quitting with the remark “I am not going to be part of this company anymore. I’m not going to be part of this disaster, from a moral perspective.”
