Two families, four environmental hotspots and one eco coach. A new show on SBS Wednesdays 7.30, Eco House Challenge, sounds like a lot of fun as well as being informative and inspiring.
Two suburban, Australian families are about to find out what it takes to help save the planet. Over several weeks, while still living their normal lives, the families must radically reduce consumption in four eco hot-spots; Energy, Water, Transport and Waste, or face the consequences we all face.
The challenge starts with a bang. No energy, no water, no vehicles and no waste removal. Arghhh! After twenty-four hours one service is returned at the consumption level scientists say will help save the planet. Once they family maintain that level of consumption another service is returned. The families will not get their lives back until they drastically reduce their consumption, have all the hot spots balanced and learn to live sustainably.
Viewers can check out their own environmental footprint with the Eco House Challenge calculator, discover the eco hot spots around their home and put themselves to the ultimate test with the fully interactive online game.
Eco House Challenge is packed with all the essential hints, tips and advice that you’ll need if you’re serious about reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
I don’t have a TV so I hope to hear from you all, what the show is like and how the families are shaping up.

I’m going to check the hot spots around my home. Actually, this is something Chris would LOVE to do. What I’m more interested in is the fact that you don’t have a TV. I’ve often thought of abandoning our TV but I have a roomie who isn’t ready….namely, Chris. The kits could care less, not to mention, I’ve read that their hearing is sensitive. I’ve wondered if its the noise level [even though low] or what they’re hearing. :-)
I hope you write about this decision in the future, Joanne. I’d love to hear about it.
Finally, maybe there’s a show on mainstream TV that’s worth something. I haven’t heard about it…but I mostly watch HBO specials and movies when I do watch it.
By the way, I had an hour conversation yesterday with a woman who is part of the South Bay [CA] Weston Price group…it was fabulously helpful. I am, of course, joining up. I’m going to my first pot luck on Sunday and am as excited as going to my first dance. :-)
Thanks for the post.
