When we got married the registry wouldn’t let me put Super Hero as my occupation, they put Home Duties on our marriage certificate instead. But I AM a Super Hero and my Super Hero name is…… The Nourisher.

GM Crops Latent Pesticides Activated After Eating

By Joanne Hay

Just another reason to eat organic (as if we needed any more). According to a recent article from the Institute for Responsible Technology, certain varieties of herbicides used on genetically modified (GM) crops — though inactive inside the plants they protect — can be re-activated after consumption and cause toxic reactions.

Recent studies have found the intestinal bacteria of animals transform the supposed non-toxic form of soil antibiotic - which has been spliced into the plant to protect it from herbicides - back into its toxic form. (News Target)
Australia has approved the use of genetically modified yeasts and bacteria for the production of cheeses and wine for some years. The following products from genetically modified crops are also used in foods on sale in Australia:

  • cotton seed oil (not food)
  • soybeans (not food unless traditionally fermented)
  • canola oil
  • corn
  • potatoes
  • sugar beet (in some imported sweet foods)

All of these, except cotton seed oil and canola oil are sourced from overseas. There are currently no genetically modified fresh fruit, vegetables, or meat sold in Australia, who knows what animals are fed though. Grass fed meat is a super way to be sure they have not been fed GM grains.

Since December 2002, the law in Australia states that food labels must show if food has been genetically modified or contains genetically modified ingredients, or whether GM additives or processing aids remain in the final food. How do you label fish and chips and other takeaway food cooked in GM cotton seed or canola oil? Most restaurants, even expensive ones use these non foods to cook in. There is the ocassional fish and chip shop who still cook in old fashioned animal fat. I never eat anything fried in vegetable oil. Its just not worth it.
