When we got married the registry wouldn’t let me put Super Hero as my occupation, they put Home Duties on our marriage certificate instead. But I AM a Super Hero and my Super Hero name is…… The Nourisher.

Home Made Hi Fat Hi Protein Energy Bars

By Joanne Hay

Kids love energy bars in their lunch box. For a while I bought Tahini bars in bulk (Melissa brand) with no sugar or gluten. But the kids soon tired of them. Here’s a recipe I came across for High Fat and High Protein Energy Bars.

Stir together:
2 cups soft coconut oil
16 oz raw almond butter
½ cup raw honey

Pour over and mix well:
½ cup sesame seeds
1 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup fine coconut
½ cup Goatein protein powder
½ cup oat bran
1 cup chopped pecans

Press into 9×13 pan. Chill and cut.

  1. This looks yummy AND easy to make :-)

I have no idea what goatein protein powder is, but was wondering if there is a substitute? Also, could you use rolled oats rather than oat bran?

Kate, I just put that recipe up minutes ago. I’ve seen Gotein powder in health food shops. It’s dried at a low temperature as far as I know. I’ll see if I can find a resource. Otherwise, I guess you could use that metagenics dried colostrum product. It’s a little expensive but very nourishing.

  3. Actually I’ve never heard of metagenics either ;-) I was thinking more of something I’d have in the cupboard already. Is the dry flouriness of the protein powder important to the recipe and could I use oat flour or quinoa flour or something instead? (although I guess it wouldn’t have the same high protein content).

  4. Metagenics is a brand of nutriceuticals. They’re pretty good. Here’s a link to their product with colostrum in it.

Gotein is low temp. dried goats milk. It doesn’t appear to be available in Australia. I will continue to investigate though, I’d love to make it available.
If you have powdered milk, use that for now but remember powdered milk is dried at very high temperatures under immense pressure. This causes the protein to be denatured and toxic.
I wouldn’t use flour as it has not been prepared correctly. (soaked/fermented)
I’d say the stickiness of the dried milk would be important to the recipe.

  5. Hello,

Has anyone tried COCONUT Flour in place of the oat bran?

Great Idea. I’ll try it out and get back to you.

Goatein powder can be bought from http://www.livingnutritionals.com in America. They ship to Australia and the Garden of Life Goatein powder is very high quality.

Hi, I subsituted Dr mercolas whey healthier powder for the goatein powder and they were yummy. Dr mercolas powder is dried at low temperature and is not pasturised. kerrie

Are we supposed to sprout the seeds in this recipe? Thanks for letting me know. I am going to try this recipe with coconut flour.

Great Idea. Australian Aboriginal peoples apparently had a rule about soaking. If the nut is smaller than your finger nail, no need to soak. So yes definitely crispy the pecans

perhaps the other two are not so important.
