The Nourisher - Editor’s Blog

When we got married the registry wouldn’t let me put Super Hero as my occupation, they put Home Duties on our marriage certificate instead. But I AM a Super Hero and my Super Hero name is…… The Nourisher.

Judy Wicks, Goddess of Localism, comes to Australia

By The Nourisher

In 2004, INC magazine named Judy Wicks one of America’s 25 most fascinating entrepreneurs, “because she’s put in place more progressive business practices per square foot than any other entrepreneur”.

Founder and CEO of the White Dog Cafe in Philadelphia, Judy is also co-founder and a director of the US-wide Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) and the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia. She is president of White Dog Community Enterprises, a non-profit dedicated to building a local living economy in the Philadelphia region.

With a four-part mission of serving customers, community, employees, and the natural environment, the White Dog businesses source all produce in season from local sustainable family farms. All meat and poultry is humanely raised, and fish and seafood are sourced from sustainable fisheries. 100% of electricity is generated by wind power, the first business in Pennsylvania to do so. 20% of profits are contributed to White Dog Community Enterprises and other non-profits to support the development of sustainable agriculture, assist new local businesses and offer business mentoring to inner-city secondary school students.

The recipient of more than 40 local, national and international awards, Judy’s business career is featured in several books
including Good News for a Change: How Everyday People Are Helping the Planet by David Suzuki and Holly Dressel.

A highlight of Judy’s visit will be Going Local — a three-day relocalisation convergence which Ethos will convene at New Farm in Brisbane from 23-25th May in partnership with other organisations. The aim of the Convergence is to provide an opportunity for people involved in the diversity of relocalisation projects throughout Eastern Australia to share their experiences and build stronger learning networks.

In May this year the Ethos Foundation will host a visit to Australia by Judy Wicks, co-founder and director of the US Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE).

Judy’s itinerary will take her to Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Lismore, Mullumbimby and the Sunshine Coast. Find out more at ClimateLeadership.net.au
