The Nourisher - Editor’s Blog

When we got married the registry wouldn’t let me put Super Hero as my occupation, they put Home Duties on our marriage certificate instead. But I AM a Super Hero and my Super Hero name is…… The Nourisher.

July Editorial :: Nourishing our Children

By The Nourisher

Early this morning I awoke with a thought in my mind about emotional bank accounts. I remembered a very funny line from the very Aussie movie, “Kenny”; describing his father he says, “he had about two cents in his emotional bank account.” I giggled and went back to sleep, but the thought kept returning.

The last month has been a troublesome one. My old, old habits of relying on drugs like caffeine to pep me up during the day and after a few days of not sleeping well, alcohol to ‘calm me down’, have returned. Louise has mirrored this troubling behaviour with her flurry of posts about issues that I relate to only too well. Many people have habits they wish they could overcome. Many people attempt to change their awareness with external stimulus: drugs, food, exercise, tantrums, shopping, gambling. We point our fingers at the substances we use to control our emotional state, blaming them for how badly we feel, but truth be told we’d likely not turn to them if we felt good in the first place.

Nourishing our bodies is a good place to start. Well Nourished bodies don’t tend to crave. Setting up good Nourishment habits in childhood is what this month’s edition is about. I’m pretty sure the great effort we put into ensuring our kids are Nourished, will serve them well into adulthood. However, we need to keep ourselves emotionally Nourished also; keep some money in the emotional bank account so too speak. Without which we’ll become indebted and reach for quick fix mood lifters like coffee, sugar, alcohol, shopping… the list goes on.

Yesterday, I happened upon a very dear friend while running errands in town. Running is an understatement. My friend helped me a bit then invited me for a cuppa. We sat and had a very Nourishing chat about many things, including my concern over slipping back into using substances. With her help I realised I’d been pushing myself to achieve, another old addiction. I could have been smelling the roses. I could now smell the roses. But do you think my emotional habits, my holding pattern, will let me? No. Must achieve. Must strive. No strive, no love. Familiar?

Fortunately there are many healing modalities that can help with these patterns. Kinesiology is one. I’m booked in for Friday morning. Once broken, these patterns can be replaced with more Nourishing patterns. Patterns that Nourish my emotional bank account. Patterns that Nourish my children also. If we ask ourselves, “what are we Nourishing?” the answer will always tell us what patterns to expect in the future.

My contribution to this month’s edition is all about setting up Nourishing patterns for eating. Using the language of imagination and fantasy we can teach children about good eating.

Kerry Foster has backed it up with a wonderful ‘how to’ article about getting nutrient dense whole foods into your children’s diet.

Of course, it would be remiss of us not to include an article about Cod Liver Oil in an edition about child nutrition.

Marnie Holmes contributed an article about setting up patterns in the home which Nourishing our Earth in her Ten Steps to Greener Parenting.

The Australian Vaccination Network share with us 10 Reasons Why Parents Question Vaccination.

We’ve reviewed the book, The Truth About Children’s Health, and Sally Fallon answers readers questions about Milk, Cholesterol, Mercury in Seafood and Constipation.

This month Karen McElroy will give away a Free Naturopathic consultation to a lucky subscriber. Go over to her blog to find out more. Mitchell Grass Meats will give away $250 worth of grassfed meat. Anna will be announcing it soon, so keep an eye out. Melrose are giving away a $40 pack of goodies. And every member of our MarketPlace has a special offer to Nourished readers.

“All round, a very Nourishing edition.” she says as she very briefly smells the roses.
