“When you are in a state of gratitude for what is … that is really what being wealthy means” - Eckhart Tolle
Please indulge me while I share the things I am grateful for.
Our Nourishing Life
A few days after last edition was released, the yurt flooded. We’d worked diligently for a few weeks to pare down our belongings, everything was completely ordered and looking very nice. Then one morning, I awoke and stepped out of bed, into a puddle. The children’s mattresses were floating. The carpet was soaking and our furniture was in danger of being destroyed. I flew into action. After signaling for help with my trusty mobile phone, Wes and I moved every piece of furniture out and into the house of our friends whose back yard we’d set up our home. I giggled to myself the ridiculousness of our situation. Expecting to be overwhelmed with stress, for some reason I was at peace. I even managed to notice how great it was that we had had to get rid of almost 1/2 our belongings to squeeze into the yurt: it took us 40 minutes to move our whole life, pretty good for a family of 5. Our friends had, the day before, left for a month’s working holiday in Western Australia, so we could easily move into their digs until we worked out how to stop the flooding. My early morning text brought so many friends running to help that my head spun over the next few days.
I am grateful for he rain finally stopping so we could dry out the yurt, gifts of turkey soup, milk runs, strong brothers helping with the dismantling and rebuilding of the yurt and collecting of pallets to make a platform, Wes’s Dad’s expertise in building, space in a friend’s personal hangar to dry the carpet, wonderful friends and grandmothers who cared so well for children while Wes and I lived doubled lives (internet entrepreneurs and yurtologists) and all we have learned about building and yurts.
I am also grateful for Filippa’s inspired contribution to this month’s edition.
Our Nourishing Edition
We’ve dedicated this edition to Digestive Health.
I am grateful that Filippa’s personal friend has very generously shared his amazing story of full recovery from severe Ulcerative Colitis that he was told could only be cured if he had his entire bowel removed.
Filippa says:
“Kirsten and I worked together for several years many years ago. Kirsten was very much into the mainstream diet. She probably considered herself to be quite health-conscious, though, and I remember her proudly describing how she cut the meat into portions of the daily recommended amount of grams to be consumed per person – and that amount of meat was what was served for dinner, no more, no less. At the time, I was a strict vegetarian, mostly vegan, who ate only fruit until 12pm (Fit For Life diet) and I’m sure Kirsten thought I was rather strange and I just thought she was mainstream!
Kirsten and I periodically kept in touch over the years after I left the job and would occasionally get together for a catch up. I can’t remember talking to Kirsten about my great dietary transformation and conversion to meat, raw dairy and a Nourishing Traditions type diet (inspired by my own health crisis) but it came as quite a surprise when she rang me up one day to ask me if I knew what “kefir” was and had I heard of the Maker’s Diet.
I had had a huge health transformation thanks to this way of eating and, especially, to raw milk so of course I was very excited to share with Kirsten what I was learning and to show her what to do with the kefir, how to make whey and then how use it to ferment vegetables and make fizzy drinks.
It was fantastic to get updates from Kirsten over time about her family’s health improvements as they gradually made the transition to the NT way of eating but the most dramatic of all was her husband Nathan’s recovery. Sometimes it takes a real healing crisis for people to seek, accept and embrace change in their lives.
So I hope you enjoy this story as much as I have and are inspired by it as much as I am.”
I am grateful that Kirsten and Nathan have shared their story of recovery through living a Nourishing lifestyle. They are practicing Christians and were drawn to Jordin Rubin’s interpretation of the bible’s instructions for Nourishment. Kirsten has also contributed a fascinating review of his book, The Maker’s Diet.
Rubin himself has contributed a How to article about healing digestive problems and his Brasco Broth - Kirsten’s rendition - will complete the package. Sally Fallon even talks about digestive complaints and bone broth this month.
Nourishing Community: learning together
We’d love to hear about your experiences with digestion. Please, dear Nourishers, feel free to share your experiences with digestive health you just may inspired us as Kirsten has. If you’re not happy with your tummy, we may have already experienced your challenge and have advice for you.
Is there a person out there, living in the western world, who hasn’t had some digestive problem in their life? I doubt it.
I am grateful for this wonderful community we’ve built together, the sharing and learning we can do as we gather. “When two or more gather in my name, I’ll be there..” Isn’t that what the bible says? I’m grateful we gather in the name of Nourishment and I watch her grow in my life and yours.
Nourishing Lessons
I too have had severe digestive problems in my life. I can relate. I find the emotions I experience warn me now of digestive issues before they manifest. The number one emotion I feel related to digestion imbalance is that of Overwhelm. When I feel I can’t take any more, it’s all too much, I just want to hide as I moan and complain about being given too much to deal with, if I stop for a minute I can see I’m damaging my digestion. Worry happens when I let Overwhelm occur. I let Overwhelm occur when I won’t accept what is in front of me. But when I feel gratitude for what is, as Eckhart suggests, I am able to assimilate my experience and actually use it to Nourish me. It’s funny, when I’m in the choice of not accepting life, railing against it, shaking my fist at God, worrying about the future: that’s when I abuse bread, coffee and alcohol. Prime digestion damaging habits. When I concentrate on gratitude, I eat broth, practise yoga, go for long walks and make for love with my darling husband. All much better for strong, healthy digestion.
