On behalf of Queenslanders Against Water Fluoridation ( QAWF Inc ) I would like to thank the many people who have recently contacted us saying that they do not want fluoridation forced on them and also the many hundreds of peolple who have sent us copies of complaint letters that they sent to Queensland Politicians or the Chief Health Officer.
Many people may not be aware that the BILL that will mandate water fluoridation on almost all of Queensland’s public water supplies was passed through the Queensland Parliament late Thursday night 13 th March. The BILL as passed, additionally removes any liability from the government, politicians, Councils and water authorities.
The Queensland mainstream media has barely reported on the passing of the BILL, an article in the early edition of the Courier Mail was replaced with an article of an unrelated issue in the later edition. The Queensland Media has also not reported that it will be impossible for anyone to be able to sue for any harm caused by water fluoridation, even harm resulting from accidents.
On the 12 th February a delegation which included a Medical Doctor, a Doctor of Biology and a Medical Scientist presented to the Premier, Health Minister, Chief Health Officer and Chief Dental Officer, evidence that Qld Health had doctored data on tooth decay that Qld Health used to promote water fluoridation and also showed how Qld Health had illegitimately dismissed a study showing a robust link between water fluoridation and Osteosarcoma in boys.
The delegation also informed the government representatives of a recently re-confirmed link between the use of Silicofluorides (the Qld government intending using these chemicals to fluoridate the water) and increased blood lead levels in children and several other health concerns associated with water fluoridation. The issue that water fluoridation was unethical mass medication that no doctor would be allowed to force on patients was also raised with Premier Bligh. Additionally, it was pointed out that people of limited means would be not be able to afford water tanks or Reverse Osmosis Units or bottled water and would be trapped and have no choice in consuming and bathing in fluoridated water.
Despite this delegation and despite most politicians receiving copious quantities of information showing that water fluoridation made little difference to decreasing tooth decay and that there are many legitimate concerns for adverse health effects and that the NHMRC or Qld government has never conducted a single Health and Safety on any human organ other than teeth, most Queensland Politicians voted to pass the BILL. Only 2 independents Dorothy Pratt and Liz Cunningham voted against the Bill , with another Independent, Rosa Lee Long who had also spoken out against, not able to be present for the vote.
In the last 3 years there have been several developments that should have seen any government be cautious about introducing water fluoridation, yet the increasing developments to cease or at least urge caution, has apparently made the Qld Government even more determined to introduce it.
In an apparently political move to show unity with the Liberal Party in a prelude to forming a new combined Coalition Party, all the National Party MPs voted for the BILL, despite all voting against mandated fluoridation in 2005 . All the members of the Labor Party, had voted against mandated fluoridation in 2005, but under Premier Anna Bligh in 2008, all voted for it.

Where to from here?

Apparently Parliament is supreme, they can make any law they wish, especially when one Party has an overwhelming majority, but that does not mean fluoridation cannot be challenged in other ways. It has been successfully challenged and rejected in other countries.
The Committee of QAWF is investigating ways that water fluoridation can be challenged legally and is continuing a fund raising campaign to enable this. (Many thanks to those of you who have already donated.)
Additionally QAWF would like to establish a data base of Queenslanders who are more at risk from effects of water fluoridation, particularly ~
- people who already have thyroid dysfunction or who may develop thyroid disease if their water supply is fluoridated
- people who have kidney impairment or diabetes ( diabetes often leads into kidney impairment )
- people who already have dental fluorosis ( white markings on teeth ) from living in fluoridated areas or from taking fluoride tablets/drops
- people who are chemically sensitive, or who may develop allergies if their water supply is fluoridated
- parents of infants under 12 months of age
- parents of boys under 20 years of age
It would be very much appreciated if people who are in the above categories could send their email and phone contact details for future contact to risk@qawf.org . All details will be kept strictly confidential.
With your permission, QAWF would like to keep in contact and continue to send out information that can be of help to inform others of the ” other side ” of water fluoridation.
Water fluoridation is very wrong: it is an American invention from the middle of last century that was used to help the American Aluminium industry get rid of their waste products.
Less than 5% of the worlds population drinks fluoridated water, with northern America being half of this 5%.
Apart from the Republic of Ireland where fluoridation is also mandated, Australia and the USA are among the most heavily fluoridated countries in the world. With Queensland , Australia would become even more fluoridated than the USA.
We may have lost round 1, but QAWF members intend to persevere with your interest and support until we see an end to forced fluoridation, which even the Queensland Government’s 2003 Position Statement on Water Fluoridation admitted is ” unethical mass medication ”
We hope that many of you who receive this message are also willing to persevere until we see an end to the unnecessary, unethical, outdated and potentially harmful practice.
We have bumper stickers available for sale for those who would to purchase. Dimensions are 90 mm deep by 250 mm wide. Price is $5 for one or $10 for 3 stickers.
Please send payment and delivery address details to PO BOX 149 Archerfield Qld 4108 if you would like some bumper stickers.
Very best wishes and many thanks for those who have helped fight forced fluoridation and will also continue to fight till it is ended.

Hi
I’m so incredibly disgusted by this.
I live in Sydney, NSW where the water contains fluoride but am lucky enough to be able to afford a filter to remove it.
I would love to send a donation to assist with your very worthy fight.
Could you let me know who to make a cheque out to and do I post it to the above address?
Warm regards
Sarah

Geelong in Victoria is going through the same fight against fluoride at the moment.. wouldn’t it be great if it could become a national resistance?
Mar 27th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Yes, going through the same fight against fluoride here in Castlemaine, Vic. I have written 3 letters to our minister for health and the replies were desturbing. Our minister for health know’s nothing about health. He likened adding fluoride to water as being as important and beneficial as adding folic acid to cereal and vitamin D2 to margarine, all in our best interest. Well I guess its similar, they’re all TOXIC ingredients!
We must keep on fighting. We need a united rally organised, same day, same time all over Australia.
Crazy, they allow soft drinks and rancid white flour to be sold to children ( or anyone for that matter ) but they wont let us drink plain rain water!

Hello Merilyn and all,
Our shire in Victoria is also being targetted for fluoridation. Politicians and dentists disregard for scientific evidence is alarming. The Department of Human Services Victoria has been using the same media mantras for years - fluoridation is “safe and effective”.
Queensland supporters are using the same words. http://www.fluoridationqld.com/advocates.htm
The most comprehensive and cited scientific review of fluoridation to date is the York Review 2000, which examined most fluoridation studies worldwide and was published in the British Medical Journal. Following these statements from the Q’land website, I’ll put a few words from the review’s Chair Professor Trevor Sheldon, just to prove that none of the supporters have even READ the best scientific literature on fluoridation. It’s fascinating that they make such confident statements, without anything to back them up…
Professor John Pearn, University of Queensland “Fluoridation is a proven, totally safe public health measure.”
Dr Zelle Hodge “AMA Queensland recognises that fluoridation of reticulated public water supplies is a safe and effective public health strategy”
Dr Jeannette Young, Queensland’s Chief Health Officer “The Queensland Government supports water fluoridation as a safe and effective public health measure”
PROF T SHELDON, YORK REVIEW 2000 “THE REVIEW DID NOT SHOW WATER FLUORIDATION TO BE SAFE.”
Dr Robert McCray, Australian Dental Association “The overwhelming body of evidence points to water fluoridation as having no adverse health affects whatsoever”
PROF T SHELDON, YORK REVIEW 2000 “THE REVIEW FOUND WATER FLUORIDATION TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY ASSOCIATED WITH HIGH LEVELS OF DENTAL FLUOROSIS WHICH WAS NOT CHARACTERISED AS ‘JUST A COSMETIC ISSUE’.”
Helen Clifford, Chair, National Oral Health Promotion Forum “Fluoridation of reticulated water supplies is the most effective socially equitable and safe method of dental caries prevention”
PROF T SHELDON, YORK REVIEW 2000 “THE EVIDENCE ABOUT REDUCING INEQUALITIES IN DENTAL HEALTH WAS OF POOR QUALITY, CONTRADICTORY AND UNRELIABLE.”
Professor Newell W Johnson, School of Dentistry and Oral Health “The fluoridation of public water supplies….proven method of substantially lowering rates of dental decay in the population drinking that water.”
Professor MaryLou Fleming “…overwhelming scientific evidence from Australia and internationally that has demonstrated a clear association between water fluoridation and a substantial decrease in dental caries.”
PROF T SHELDON, YORK REVIEW 2000 “..THE SIZE OF THE ESTIMATED BENEFIT, ONLY OF THE ORDER OF 15%, IS FAR FROM ‘MASSIVE’.”
Your Queensland pro-fluoridation lobbyists are really excelling at making those fluoridation mantras more far-fetched than ever. Looks like they’re so busy promoting fluoridation that they don’t have time to read the research. We are taking action to have the incorrect Victorian statements retracted.

I’m on the fence with this one, but I have to say:
where is the accepted scientific evidence that fluoridation is detrimental to one’s health at the current 1 ppm in drinking water!?
Seems most of what I read is out of context , incomplete and unrelated to standard fluoridated water. To say that fluoridation is an effective means of disposal of an aluminium byproduct is bizarre to say the least. I am sure there are more economical ways to be rid of this material than to go to the trouble of placing it in our water supply which requires strict measurement controls (expense), processing (expense) and transport (expense). There would be far cheaper ways of dealing with it. Please present the complete factual results (not fragments of a study) that support your argument as there are receptive people like me willing to listen to succinct and accurate information.
Jul 31st, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Hi Phil,
I don’t subscribe to the idea that fluoridation is an easy way to dispose of a byproduct either. I don’t see it mentioned on this page - best to go to wherever you saw it mentioned and ask them. Even so, the fluoride that is used here in Victoria is certainly from the Incitec Pivot fertiliser company at Geelong, and is recycled waste from their fertiliser manufacturing process (source, Department of Human Services Victoria).
The whole fluoridation “safe and effective” mantra smugly relies on the fact that there is absolutely no requirement by the government to conduct any research about fluoride’s “safety”. This is pretty amazing, since any other medication or treatment has a requirement for the burden of proof of safety, rather than requiring that someone prove it to be unsafe.
There is an international conference on fluoridation to be held in Canada in a few weeks, which will bring together scientists and professionals who have been looking into the questions you ask about fluoridation being detrimental to health. I’m sure it will be reported at the “fluoridealert.com” website. We’re all waiting for it.

Hi Debbie
This is the statement I referred on this page above:
“Water fluoridation is very wrong: it is an American invention from the middle of last century that was used to help the American Aluminium industry get rid of their waste products.”
I have heard this comment elsewhere as well, even being a waste of Chinese industry.
Wherever the fluoride comes from it is still going to be in an element state.
If you were aware of everywhere water has been in the planet’s history, you could feel somewhat concerned. What I am trying to express is that water too is recycled and none the worse for it. Fluoride waste may be none the worse for it either.
Now, some bottled waters contain a small amount of fluoride (.05ppm) even though it is illegal to add it by the manufacturer. So I would say it does occur naturally.
Can you point me to a properly conducted scientific examination where fluoridated water was determined to have detrimental effects. I only want those instances that relate to normal fluoridated water, not tablets or remote area Australia where levels in the water were around 4ppm. To carry the argument that we should be proving fluoride is not harmful is a bit tricky. I don’t know if you use cosmetics but I doubt that these have been proven to be absolutely safe as much as fluoride may be. I would doubt aspirin has been proven to be absolutely safe, or that there is much else that can carry such an absolute provisio.
My personal feeling is not to add it but because I have been drinking it for so long now I wish it was in the water when I was a kid - it would have made it worth it to have better teeth than I have now.
Thanks for letting me know about the upcoming conference in Canada. Is there any background information about this available?
thanks
Phil

Phil
I grew up in Brisbane with no fluoride in the water, I also had a hippy mother who would not let us use toothpaste with fluoride. I now live in Sydney and use a filter to remove flouride. I am currently 33 years old and have no fillings or dental problems.
The form of fluoride that occurrs in very small amounts naturally in water is calcium flouride not sodium fluoride.
Aug 1st, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Hello again Phil,
The website that gives details of the conference is “fluoridealert.com”. The same website gives links to heaps of information about fluoridation at various levels, from .6ppm to over 10ppm (China, India etc) where skeletal fluorosis has deformed the bones and teeth of entire communities.
The state government’s department of Human Services says that 5000 children a year in Victoria have a general anaesthetic for tooth decay, to win our support for fluoridation. But the vast majority of those children live in fluoridated Melbourne, something they don’t say. Always go to the study yourself, I don’t trust the government.
Regarding medications like aspirin, these are all optional, not like needing to drink water. Aspirin and any other medication or treatment has compulsory research requirements (unlike fluoridation) and carries a warning.
The best independent review of scientific literature on fluoridation is the York Review 2000, online at the University of York, England. A few quotes from it are in an earlier posting above. The NHMRC of Australia did it’s own review last year, but it reviewed most of what the York review did, and wasn’t independent. Even the NHMRC doesn’t claim that fluoridation is “safe”.

Is that a reverse osmosis filter?
Aug 1st, 2008 at 5:50 pm
Yes, reverse osmosis or distillation are the only two ways (to the best of my knowledge) that remove ALL fluoride from water. There are other filters that remove varying percentages of it as well. Reverse osmosis is not ideal, like distillation, you end up with ‘dead’ water but I prefer this to drinking fluoride in my water. I offset some of the dead water issues by adding a small amount of himalayan sea salt to my jug of drinking water. RO are the most expensive water filters too and not everyone can afford this type of water filter. We should be given the choice over whether we want or need extra fluoride (or any type of supplement or medication) not be forced to find ways to remove it.

“fluoridealert.com” has a redirection to a pro ADA fluoride content area!?
I believe what you mean to be referring to is fluoridealert.org. This redirection seems to be a a point of contention amoung the anti-fluoride community? Hope you may see my point but why is there continual reference to the “.com” website instead of the “.org” website. From this I can’t help but wonder why the “.com” site was not initially acquired for anti-fluoride information as it is the naming convention people would quickly link to!
Aug 3rd, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Oh dear. You’re right about the website being “fluoridealert.org” rather than “.com” Phil. I normally just google fluoridealert to go to the site. Quite a fuss was made about the ADA (American Dental Association) leaping in to buy the fluoridealert.com name to set up their pro-fluoride activist website, to try to stop people finding anti-fluoride information at the original fluoridealert.org site.
The “continual reference to the ‘.com’ website” you mention (if you’re referring to me) is entirely accidental, and something the sneaky alternative-site dentists would be delighted about. It’s a good opportunity if you land at their site accidentally to email them complaining about their misleading misinformation, something I did last night when I first found out about their site.
.org is the usual trailer for not-for-profit organisations and .com implies a business - I guess that’s why they went for .org.
Aug 4th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Debbie , not just your reference but a friend previously complained she couldn’t get to that site (I now understand the problem she had). I also found incidence of others complaining about this issue. The operators of the ‘.org’ website should have registered the ‘.com’ site as a precaution as it is quite normal that people are most familiar with the ‘.com’ type of name.
If there is a cause to fight for it shouldn’t be done in a slap happy way. All evidence must be presented in its entirety and not out of context as well as ensuring it is not presented in a way that is alluring or misleading. The problem I may have at looking at the fluoride issue is the strength of opposing argument. It’s a bit like climate change - not all our scientists agree but there is more scientific consensus now than there ever was. This is what the anti fluoride brigade needs for success. It is no good gathering evidence from here and there. A broad consensus of scientific agreement is needed as a show of conclusive feeling to the public. Conspiracy theories won’t wash, there are more than enough qualified experts out there who will break ranks if conspiracy is noticed. Consensus is critical. Just as I am annoyed that my milk is played around with so much compared to what I got some 40 years ago, I am fairly adverse to any change to what I eat more than is absolutely necessary.
I sent an email to ADA last night as well but I did not find a proper contact address for them.
I sent it to: membership@ada.org

I’m livid about our so called leaders/politicians making decisions supposedly on our behalf that will negatively affect our society, particularly those with chronic health problems. I certainly don’t want fluoride in my drinking water, and can’t even imagine drinking “poo water” thats never going to be rid of some of the most destructive chemicals! This is chemical warfare!
My kids and theirs brush their teeth and drink water not cordials and soft drinks; the kids they’re trying to protect should do the same and then their teeth will be perfect like our family’s! Who the hell do our not even elected representatives think they are? REVOLT!!!

I have had two episodes of serious illness in my life, both coincidentally at the same times as I have been exposed to fluoridated water, Sydney 1968, Melbourne 1978-9.
I have enjoyed good health for the past 30 years, but now our water is ‘Blighted’, I have no idea where I am going to be able to live.
I am installing a reverse osmosis filter in the kitchen, and tanks for laundry and bathroom, but I live in Cairns, where I get lots of rain. My family all live in Brisbane and seem to be resigned to their fate.
Qld politicians must be amongst the thickest people on the planet.
There is plenty of information out there.
Here are some reputable sites I have found within a few minutes of searching the net.
http://www.fluoride-journal.com
This presents papers from researchers from all around the world who attend an international conference every couple of years.
http://www.robodoonproductions.com
This is a video explaining history etc.
There is a book available called The Fluoride Deception by Christopher Bryson.
http://www.glenwalker.net/ The Australian Fluoridation News is an informative site

Hi folks, Can I direct you to a book that you may all be interested in? It is called “Fluoride, The Ageing Factor” by Dr John Yiamouyiannis , BS, PhD - Health Action Press ISBN 0-913571-032-2.
I was particularly impressed by this author’s qualifications, BS in Biochemistry, University of Chicago, PhD in Biochemistry, University of Rhode Island - Post doctoral research at Western Reserve University Medical School, and most interestingly - biochemist editor at Chemical Abstracts Service which is the world’s largest chemical information centre where he first became aware of the health-damaging effects of fluoride.
There are no websites mentioned but Googling the info might bring up more facts. Appreciation also to John Cirocco author of “Living Proof” for providing me with the above information in his book
Good Luck to QAWF

“The Fluoride Deception” by Christopher Bryson is avail to watch on you tube. There is a part one & two totalling about 40 min.
Phill,
the flouride that comes from the scrubbers of the aluminum and fertiliser industries is also contaminated with poisons like lead and arsenic. Then they add a heap of other crap to the water to balance out the ph. Soon as the Fluoride went into Castlemaine’s water supply most of us felt the difference in the shower and bath. Still now 6 months later and its awful. I never feel as clean and refreshed as I did before it was added. The water feels hard and yuck.
Coincidentally, soon as the fluoride went in I’ve slept almost every arvo with my little one. I was never able to do this before, even during total exhaustion in Nina’s first year. Thing is I never drink a drop of fluoridated water, I filter tank water so if it is connected to fluoride, its from the hot ( too hot ) showers I have every morning. I have felt different since the fluoride went in and I sleep HEAPS. Anyone else that is filtering the fluoride or tank notice this? I could just be recovering from 2 1/2 years of sleep deprevation?
ACTION
An idea, I contacted Get Up ( an Australian on line political action group) to see if they would take this on as one of their campaigns. They said no because they didn’t think it was important to their members. Sad because fluorides only going make people less active by dumbing them down. Anyway it would be great for people to call “Get Up” and tell them we need help to end Australia’s water fluoridation now especially that it’s known to harm our childrens developing brains! Get Up - 02 9264 4037 and or e mail http://www.getup.org
Tell your friends to call Get Up!
Its worth a try, these guys have over 300,000 on line members and fast growing.
One of the dentists at Melb DHS who you sometimes get when ringing in opposing water fluoridation, Andrew actually believed that indigenous groups around the world had really bad teeth! Of course he never heard of Dr Price! I did mail them info on Price’s work but it would be more effective if other people did this too. Maybe they might actually READ IT PROPERLY and start thinking for themselves! Here’s the Vic e mail address environmentalhealth@dhs.vic.gov.au

July’s Getup survey asking about how we feel about certain issues and two recently added were the current legislation on insurance for midwives making homebirth a near impossible option for women.
AND WATER FLUORIDATION!!!! Please do the survey and pass it on!! There are other very important issues on their survey but these two are crutial now, put them as highest priority.
