Where to buy wise foods, whole foods and real foods in Australia

By Joanne Hay

The momentum is building. The rediscovery of ancient wise food ways is blossoming around the world and Australia is joining the movement towards localised, organic, community farming and traditional food preparation. Weston A Price Foundation chapters are springing up all over the country. We aim to help provide a resource for those looking for organic traditional foods in their area by listing the chapters and their local traditional food suppliers on this page.

You local chapter is working hard to find sources of nutrient dense foods, from milk products, eggs and meat from pasture-fed animals to organic fruits and vegetables and fermented products. They also represent the Weston A Price Foundation at local fairs and conferences and may host cooking classes, potluck dinners and other activities to help you learn to integrate properly prepared whole foods into your lifestyle. They may also be able to put you in touch with health practitioners who share Weston A Price’s nutritional recommendations.

Beer
Coopers make five naturally conditioned (unpasteurised) ales: Pale, Sparkling, Dark, Vintage and Stout. These beers are all good sources of vitamin B complex because the yeast sediment in the bottom of the bottles is rich in vitamin B. None of them are pasteurised. They do not put any of their naturally conditioned ales in cans though. Coopers Light and Draught are both available in cans. Both of these beers are artificially carbonated and pasteurised €“ as are most other beers in Australia (Information from Frank Akers at the Coopers Brewery). Of all the styles, dark, vintage/special old and stout are the most nutritious, also good sources of chromium (more tasty than brewers yeast). In addition, they now sell a mid-strength ale called Mild Ale (3.5%) alc/vol which is available in 375ml bottles and cans and Dr. Tim’s Traditional Ale (4.5% alc/vol) available in 375 ml cans. These are available from The Grape liquor stores, also Liquor land and Woolworth’s liquor stores. Most pubs sell this beer now.

1. Just an update on our naturally conditioned ales…. In addition to those listed above, we now have a mid-strength ale called Mild Ale (3.5%) alc/vol which is available in 375ml bottles and cans. We also have Dr. Tim’s Traditional Ale (4.5% alc/vol) available in 375 ml cans.

2. Frank, Are these ales unpasteurised also? It’s our little bacterial buddies we drink beer for, not only it’s intoxicating effects.

3. That is correct Joanne, none of our “naturally conditioned ales” are pasteurised. Pasteurisation would kill the yeast, resulting in flat beer (completely unacceptable!) because there would be no second fermentation in the bottle/can.

Cheers, Frank Akers.

4. Hi Joanne, Was just wondering why you have recommended the Ayam and Trident brands as the best cocnut milk/cream to buy and where you sourced the information from.

Thank you!

Louise

5. Louise,
These brands do not include emulsifiers or other additives. Since coconuts are grown easily without fertilizers or pesticides, there is no need to buy organic. So these brands are the cheapest source. However, I do choose to buy coconut milk from companies like Spiral Foods. They are local (Australian) and do not sell non foods like 2 minute noodles loaded with MSG as Trident do. I also avoid the major supermarket chains so don’t often come across these brands.

6. Good afternoon,

Am just reading Nourishing Traditions and am keen to find some real milk.
I live in Sydney and assume that I don’t stand a chance?
Do you know of anywhere that sells it?

11. Hi

After reading the book “The Maker’s diet” I am keen to source some Raw goat’s milk and associated products. Was wondering if anyone knew if there was a supplier in Sydney or if I can get it dielivered to Sydney thanks

Kareem

12. Kareem

There was a source of Raw Goat Cheese in Brisbane, but I hear the farmer is overseas pursuing a singing career. Next best option is to find a local farmer yourself and do a deal. Let your chapter know what you’re after, they might be able to help. Vicki Poulter is the head of the Sydney Chapters. Her phone number is in the comments above.
Good Luck love to hear of your success

13. For anyone looking for REAL butter, cheeses, creme freche and cultured buttermilk in Sydney, look for the Gympie stand at the following markets around Sydney:
Pyrmont Good Food market, first Saturday of each month
North Sydney organic market, third Saturday of each month
Leichhardt organic market (Orange Grove School), every Saturday
Frenches Forest organic market, every Sunday
We’re not able to answer any questions about whether or not it’s raw…….
But it’s REAL…
If you know what I mean….!

14. Almost all health food stores sell raw goats milk in one litre bottles. It’s also worth requesting orders of Cleopatras Bath milk and ‘body butter’ (cream) at any health food store. It is a true quality product that needs to be supported.

15. Nui have a new website, http://www.nuicoconut.com

16. Just an update on what Wholefoods House are selling that relates to WAP nutrition.
We’ve got prebrewed Kombucha tea, and the Phoenix range of properly fermented ginger beer, cola and lemonade made with raw honey.
We also have a full range of organic seaweed products, and Lifestreams new seaweed based wholefood calcium supplement. Our wholefood supplement range includes Noni, a variety of green powders and tablets (spirulina, chlorella, etc…)
We have regular orders of Cleopatras Bath Milk in, as well as raw goats milk in one litre containers.
We have 500mL containers of chicken stock that’s nicely gelled and made from organic free range chooks.
We also have a number of raw honey products, and a nice supply of delicious rapadura!
We get good quality sourdough breads in from Sonoma bakery as well.
We have a nice range of high mineral sea salts, and the Paris Creek yoghurts that I’ve found to be the best for extracting whey.
Of course, we have a full range of organic and biodynamic fruit and veggies as well as Melrose cod liver oil, etc…

17. OH- and the Grainfields cultured probiotic…
:D

18. Is there a Melbourne or Victorian chapter of the Weston Price FOundation ?

19. Here are the two Weston Price Foundation Chapter leaders in Victoria.

Hi, i reside in the CDB area , sydney.

Im after raw or freshly pasterised goats milk, to make cheese.

I dont want to travel 2hr trip to get or even have time to barter with a farmer.
Can someone plz tell me, if this is possible & where to obtain it from a store?? (even if the milk is not fresh)

Thanks in advance
Domingo

23. Hello,
I notice that you recommend Ayam and then Trident coconut milk and cream. Do you know, please, if these companies use aluminium in the tins that contain these products?
Kind regards,
Cheryl

24. Hi
anyone cen help me find goats milk products to buy in Darwin Northern Territory. I am looking for goats yoghurt, cheeses. I find that I can not eat or drink dairy products as this give me runny bowels for days.
Looking forward for any advice
cheers

25. Kerry Ann
There are no chapter leaders in the Norther Territory yet, so there’s no one I can ask. Perhaps you could become one.. I will see if I can find out if there are any members of the Weston Price foundation near you and hook you up. I’m not surprised pasturised milk does this to you. There is probably no source for raw milk up there, no lush pasture. So goat’s milk would be most appropriate. Hopefully some one who knows some one will read this post and answer your comment. Subscribe to the RSS feed. Good luck and please let us know if you find a source of any of these wise foods in NT.
Blessings

Hi

Can anyone tell me if there is a good brand of almond milk available in Australia? I currently drink Bonsoy but would like to mix it up a bit with some almond milk, so looking for an organic brand (one that doesn’t have added sugar too). Thanks.

27. Just to let you know, Ayam brand coconut milk/cream. Is both pasteurized and homogenized for a uniform smooth consistency

28. Thanks Viet

Is there any other brand you recommend?

29. i’m looking for raw milk in canberra or cooma. does anyone know where i might get it?

30. In NT and EFLF there are recommendations for stock brands you can use if you haven’t got time to make your own. Are there any brands in Australia?

31. Hi Joanne or anybody out there!

Does anybody know of an unheated & unfiltered honey? My family has been using a Pureharvest raw honey, although this is raw but this is heated until 40C-45C. This is what is most availabe, heated to 45C and filtered so that the honey is not solid. I want unheated and unfiltered, if anybody knows where to get or where this is being sold.

Thanks,

Maria

32. Maria

Try your local farmers market. If they do treat their honey, you can ask them to give you some unheated especially.

Joanne

33. Thanks, Joanne.

34. I was just wondering about the raw milk. If you buy it in bulk, does it affect the nutritional value to freeze it or is it better to get it in smaller quantities. It’s just that I have to travel quite a distance to get it and it would be a lot easier to get more each time I go so I can travel less.
Thanks,
Amanda

35. Enzymes are reduced when milk is frozen and after thawing the cream stays separated making it a little chunky to drink. These negatives are small compared to drinking pasteurized milk, in my opinion.

36. Hi Joanne. You mentioned brands of coconut milk before that are free from emulsifiers etc. We use Spiral which has listed in the ingredients: Organic coconut extract (Certified Bio Agri Cert, Italy), guar gum (less than 0.5%). I guessing the guar gum has something to do with the distribution of the solids (no fat floating on top). Can you tell me if guar gum is a healthy additive?
By the way, thanks for this website!

37. Robyn,
Guar Gum is an extract of a cluster been (India) used for thickening. Some people react to it. I’d say those with severe gastrointestinal problems may have difficulty with it. It’s very fibrous.

38. Hi Amanda
I live in Canberra and if you havent sourced the raw milk yet, you can obtain it from the Mountain Creek Wholefoods at the Griffith Shops on Baker Street. The order usually arrives on Tuesday afternoons and they often have extras. If you want it regularly, put your name down. I’ve been trying to get them to order in the cream but for some reason they wont or cant get it.
Cheers
Leisa

39. Hi everyone, great reading over all the info above. Does anyone know where I can buy Coconut flour in Melbourne? I have called a few Health Stores, Macro at The Glen has agreed to inquire about stocking it. But so far I can only find it online for $15 per kilo. If you havent read about the high fibre benifits of coconut flour, just google it up, theres so much info out there, it should be in our daily breads. Thanks guys :-)
Cheers, Maxine.

40. Just thought, others may like to try this recipe? I use it in place of margarine, we all know how toxic it is now, and how we desperatly need to get more Omega 3’s and consume too many 6’s. So this will look and feel exactly like Nuttelex margarine, the taste is a little tart, but when with mighty mite or other spreads etc, the kids wont even know! Ok, so u need: 500g Creamed Cottage Cheese (Quark), 250ml Flaxseed Oil (I use Melrose) and 2 t of honey. Blend it all for at least 3 mins til resembles a custard like consistancy. Now that I have discovered the health benefits of Coconut Oil, I will be using some in place of the Flax in my next batch. What the proptein does in this mix is allows the nutrients from the oils to be carried directly into your system and absorbed. This recipe is actually from a Cancer Therapy diet, these oils are depleted in our diets and we desparetly need them in our bodies. Also, as another health note: When my kids ask for 2 min noodles, it used to send panic signals to my brain, thinking about all that artificial stuff attacking their bodies. So now I use the noodles and add my own garlic powder, onion powder, salt and dill powder, with a lil splash of soy sauce. It looks, smells and tastes great, they didnt even notice the difference…. and no hyperactivity afterwards either. Ooh ooh, I’m going a bit nuts here, I made some yummo muffins yesterday, they look like Orange and sultana but they are really pumpkin and Sweet potato! So they are a lower GI and still sweet and yummy. Will have to type up the recipe hey? Cheers to all you health nuts out there :-) Maxi.

41. Hi I was trying to look at the WA chapter but the link doesn’t seem to work. Does anyone know where I can get real milk, cheese, etc from in Perth?
Thanks, Trish

42. Update: Today I actually DID find some Coconut Flour! Yes, just in at Knox City Melbourne, Lower level Health food shop nearest Fruit and Vege Market. $14.95 per kilo, excellent, cheaper than online, organic and no postage or waiting for delivery, woohoo. So now I’m well equipped with Coconut Flour, oil, and cream. I have just invented a warm milk drink as opposed to tea… milk, honey and coconut cream. I actually started off with oil instead of cream but most people wouldnt like the sound of that or the look of the oil floating on the top. Just remember, its NOT fattening and is the only product that naturally has a protein found only in Mothers milk! So, with this drink along with my spread and EPO capsules, I am regularly consuming enjoyable health giving and natural products that I am totally confident will improve my health, energy levels and even hair, skin and nails. I also produce my own range of skin products from the best of natures offerings, along with a vegetarian diet, and have the complexion, suppleness and looks of a woman of 25 rather than 37. I think I should find a way of starting another blog, lol, I love this one but dont wanna hog it, he he. Come on people…. where are u all? Love to all, Maxi :-)

43. Maxine

Re NT Goat milk enquiry, I know there is a goat herd person in Katherine - Rowland - Im not sure if they milk, but they may be willing to sell you a goat 0889722271?

Let me know how you go.

46. Thanks so much Helen. That’s just what Nourished Magazine is here for. This sort of community support is what we all need to change the world and create a future we want. One goat at a time hey..

Kerry Anne. If you do get the goat, we’d love to hear how you go too. That would be a great guest blog, would it not? Kerry Anne’s goaty adventures. Something we could all learn from and be inspired by.

Good luck

47. Thansk for your help with the goats produces. I eat goat fetta cheese and looking for the yogurt, any other goat produces to enjoy with my meals.

48. I just wanted to make a comment on the Gympie Butter. I’d been reading on the Weston Price website about bright yellow butter being high in vitamins but couldn’t find it anywhere. The butter in the shop was a pale yellow. I found the gympie stall at the Frenchs Forrest organic markets two weeks ago and bought some butter. It is the brightest yellow and is delicious.

49. I’ve just read all of the above and have heard of Gympie butter a couple of times. Where does this butter come from? I live near Gympie in Qld, is that where it origninates, if so where can I get it? Cheers.

50. Jill,

Best Cultured Butter, Cheese, Buttermilk: see Camille at the gympie farm stand –– powerhouse markets 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month.

Enjoy.

Karen over at food for thought wrote a great quote from Sally Fallon: ““the sign that you have put enough butter on your bread is that it shows teeth marks in it when you bite in.”

51. Hi,

I’m diabetic and vegan. Does anyone know where I could get almond milk from? I currently drink soy milk, but am not keen on it. I live in Queanbeyan, so anywhere there or in Canberra (or even if I could order it online) would be great. I’ve also read about hemp milk- does anyone know where I could source that from? I need a dairy alternative, but oat & rice milk are too high GI for my blood sugar levels.

I was interested to read above that coconut flour is available. I think this would be great as I assume it would be low GI. Where can I order it online please Maxine, and does anyone know where I could get it in the Canberra region? Thanks!

52. I have been getting the Cleopatras milk from Griffith shops for a few months now and love it.

Does anyone in Canberra know where I can get very high protein (ie hard) wheat? I grind my own flour. I have been using the biodynamic one available in 25kg sacks at Griffith but it is not high enough in protein (ie is meant to be 12.5%).

53. Hi all,

Hope this doesn’t come off as shameless self-promotion but my wife & I run an organic food store on the Gold Coast called Relish Organics and I am just wanting to let the people on this board know that they can purchase many such whole foods as discussed in this forum at our store 7 days a week. We stock Cleos raw milk, Gympie Farm cultured butter, goats & sheeps yoghurts & cheeses, several brands of coconut oil (including some great coconut cream concentrate), almond, hazelnut & quinoa milks, heaps of raw nuts, meat and fruit & veg. All certified organic. We are at Mudgeeraba just off the Pacific Motorway. More details at http://www.relishorganics.com.au.

Thanks!
Luke

54. Does anyone know where I can find “Whey Healthier” in Oz/Perth? Also keen to find Cleopatras.
Also, Luke from Relish just letting you know I have heard great things about your shop and I am in Perth, so well done to you and your wife.

59. Cleoparta’s bath milk is available from http://www.abundantorganics.com.au it is a sydney organic home delivery service. Ther is a limit to how little they will deliver but have been using them for over 12 months there great

60. I have ordered in Cleopatra’s milk from my health food shop and they rang me today to say it was in and that they had put it in the freezer for me. Just wondering if this will affect the milk and will it still be ok for my kids and I to drink? Do you think they freeze it in transit? so then it will have already been defrosted and frozen again maybe?? My son has tooth decay so we are trying the weston price approach to helping build up his health . thanks for a fantastic website!

61. Freezinng is fine. Just make sure you defrost it slowly in the fridge to avoid the fats staying in globules making the milk a little chunky. They should freeze it in transit, raw milk doesn’t travel well, but I’m not sure if they do. The jiggling causes it to become cheese, another reason why herd shares are the way to go with raw milk. I healed my daughters tooth decay (created by soy milk) using raw milk. The enamel ‘grew over’ the holes. They were still discoloured but cavities didn’t grow. Your welcome Aurora, thanks for the fantastic comment.

70. Does anyone know where i could source raw milk butter cheese in Newcastle NSW i think we can get cleopatra’s milk here but our local organic shop does not carry it, also does anyone know of where i could source raw goats milk as well as our youngest is on it.

71. Kathy, is there a market in the Newcastle area for raw goat’s milk in bulk? As we are willing to send our milk to any area it is required on refrigerated freight. Read our note on no. 68 & 69 Wayne.

72. Hi Wayne,

Possibly, we have a farmers market at honeysuckle on Sundays and also I have just found out that there is one at Broadmeadow on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. We also have a Organic Shop that home delivers from Maitland. I will be going to the Broadmeadow markets on Sunday the 23rd so will have more of an idea of whats available there then.

73. Does anyone know if Cleopatra’s milk is available in Melbourne or Victoria. Up until a couple of years ago I was able to purchase raw butter shipped from Tasmania, but this is no longer available. Any help greatly appreciated.

74. I am wanting to make contact with someone involved with Nourished Magazine by email. I am organising a Health & Environment Awareness Day in Narrabri (North West NSW) and wanted to know if I could obtain any magazines and/or other information for those of us out here that have very little access to such information.
Would someone kindly email berniebierhoff@bigpond.com with advice on who I should contact.
Many thanks, Colleen Bierhoff

75. Colleen, it is I the elusive Super Hero and editor of Nourished Magazine. Da na na na na. You can contact me using the contact form found via the link at the bottom of every magazine page or the Contact Author page on the editor’s blog. Or just comment anywhere. I’ll here your call.

I will email you but need to tell you and all other readers, Nourished Magazine is not printed. Nor will it ever be. The main reason is that we are an online community. The magazine is merely a beginning point for further conversation.

I will send you some cards with our name and www address so you can send people here to learn. I’ll also send you some Weston A Price Foundation material.

Thanks for organising the Health and Environment Awareness Day up there in Narrabri. It’s really warming to know people are doing such things.

76. Serena I can only buy Whey Healthier through Mercola’s website. mercola.com I wish there was an Australian distributor. The shipping costs are so expensive.

Trish I’m also after raw milk/products. Have you found anywhere local? I’m in the northern suburbs of Perth.

77. Hi, I would like to buy grains, bread flours, oats, rice in bulk because I’m trying to stay out of the shops as much as possible, but I’m finding it very hard to find wholesalers in Sydney, only retailers everywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions for where I could buy such things? I am going to try ordering from Kialla Foods directly but they only have a couple of things we need. Perhaps I could give the Sydney Markets at Flemington a go, but I daren’t venture to that massive place without some words of advice first! Thanks in advance for your help.

78. Hi, for people looking for Cleo’s milk, raw goat milk, sheep, goat youghurts & Paris Creek Yoghurts, cert organic meats, eggs, sourdough breads etc including Nourishing Traditions, etc we carry these foods in our shop at Margate Village Shopping Centre, Oxley Ave Margate on the Redcliffe Peninsula. Go Vita Margate Health & Organics 07 3283 8677

79. A wide range of bulk grains, flour etc are available from community food stores such as Alfalfa House Co-operative (listed above, 113 Enmore Rd Newtown 2042 9519 3374). You can become a member and buy any quantity from their bins or order in bulk from them (in calico bags of 5kg, 10kg etc) for an extra discount.

This list includes other co-ops (they’re not at all like ordinary retail shops) and self-serve shops: http://users.cobweb.com.au/~gloria/wholefood.html

One thing I’m yet to find anywhere in Sydney is pickling lime — for soaking polenta (as per Nourishing Traditions). Any ideas?

Hi all,

I have spent days on Google trying to find dolomite powder and also pickling lime powder. Does anyone know of a mail order source? Ive also been to my local pharmacy. I did find some moon tide powder on one site but at $80.00 AUD for 200 grams I thought Id be better off crushing my own…..Is the animal grade dolomite suitable for humans? And is builders lime the same as pickling lime?

Frustrated Helen

81. Hi Helen

I bought some Dolomite powder a few years ago from my health food shop when my homebirth midwife recommended it - it was very cheap too about $10 for 250gms I think from memory.

Hi all, I’m wondering if anyone can suggest a supplier/butcher who will sell organic lard and beef tallow from pasture-fed animals. I try to render these as much as possible from the organic meat that I buy but it is not always possible. I’ve tried several organic butchers in Sydney with no luck.

Thanks,
Helena

85. Does anyone know cheap places to buy quinoa in nsw? I’m eating them like a horse now lol

86. Hi Helena, we buy our meat from Southside Gourmet Meats at Ramsgate 9529-3752. Their meat isn’t certified organic, but it is the closest I can find that’s in our budget AND it’s 100% grass-fed. The butcher tells me that the farmers are working towards organic certification. The meat is GREAT! He sells tallow to my husband for making soap :) Katrina.

Hi Sally…thanks for the tip off, what a well kept secret Honest to Goodness is!! For the new visitors, the website is http://www.goodness.com.au. I couldn’t believe the range of products they have, they were really knowledgeable and great to deal with. To top this off my parcel arrived the next day - how awesome. So I got baking…. the muffins were great with the organic coconut flour and as for the organic dried fruit, I now have a pantry full of it for the kids. For those above looking for bulk grains, including the gluten free ones, I noticed they also stock a wide range of those and from what it seems the more you order the cheaper it gets. I think next time I might rope some friends in so we can get the parcel & share it. They stock a wide variety of flours, some of which I have never heard of, but no doubt most of you have. Thanks Sally, you have definately made shopping easy for me!!!!

89. No worries! If you are interested in baking bread, have a look at Kialla.com.au. They deliver as well if your order is over $50.

90. oops, sorry it’s kiallafoods.com.au

Hi Sally …thanks for the kialla link. I had a quick look at their site.. do you know if they charge for delivery to Sydney & if so how much?

92. The cost of freight varies, but to give you an idea my last order was $65 and the freight was $23 extra. It still works out to be worth it, especially if you buy the bigger bags. Just make sure you can store bags, partic. open ones, properly.

93. Can anyone comment on the various organic food box delivery companies around Brisbane? We are half an hour south of Ipswich actually. I presume couriers or the companies would deliver here. Delivery is not the problem, it’s more the quality of the food and the integrity of the suppliers that I am keen to find out about. Thanks, Anne

94. Check out FoodConnect.com.au - community supported Agriculture, home delivered.

95. Gema, whe is the Wholefods House located and how much is the Cleopatra’s bath milk?

96. Wholefoods House is in waterloo and Woollahra. I just bought some yesterday from the Woollarhra store, but i bought other things too and can’t recall the price.

97. Hi, Im getting a little confused about butter. I know raw butter is best, but if i can’t source raw butter in sydney, then whats next best - organic pasturised butter, or cultured butter, and does anyone know of a good brand to buy?
also whats better for you, raw cows milk, or raw goats milk?

thanks

98. I was given a very good book by my in laws, Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon, which I have found helpful to some degree. You need not follow everything she says, but ii find that it is great on the dairy front and it has lots of good recipes for things that you may find in the shops, but can make at home instead.

Just thought I’d share.

Thanks Sophie for the info.

99. Hi Spohie,

A great butter that i’ve been getting for years is Southcape unsalted. It’s cultured and comes from pasture-fed cows (I sent an e-mail to them to confirm) and has a deep yellow colour.

Most importantly it tastes really good.

If you’re in Sydney you can get in David Jones, Harris Markets or Macro about $2/$3 a block.

Hoep that’s of use to you.

Darren

100. Hi Darren, thanks for the butter info, I will try it for sure. Ive also ordered Nourishing Traditions from amazon and should recieve it soon. can’t wait til i do :)

101. I know the one you are talking about Darren. Macro at Hornsby westfield sells it. I had no idea it is cultured, will try it next time I get butter, but i thought all butters had some form of cultures in it?

Does anyone know where to get organic buttermilk or buttermilk culture? The Sally Fallon book has a recipe for making buttermilk, but I need the culture and Macro at Hornsby does not have either the butter milk or culture.

102. Amanda,
I am intereted in grinding my own flour and am wonderig what sort of equipment do you use and where did you get it?

103. Hi Sophie,

The best butter i have found is Gympie Farm butter. It is raw butter and comes salted ( Celtic Salt) or unsalted.. I phoned the maker recently and it is only available from Markets. i get it from Pyrmont. It is the richest yellow colour and it is unpastuerised. Yummy!

104. Hi Glenn, yes ive read about the famous gympie farm butter, and i would love to try it. Do you know if it is available at Frenches Forest markets as i was planning on venturing out there in the morning (sunday)?
it sounds divine!
just another question - should yoghurt be raw as well, or is pure sheeps milk yoghurt that is pasturised good for you as well as it is cultured……? because i love it, but am not sure if its still any good…
thanks

105. You can also get Gympie Farm butter at Fruitgasm in Bronte, on Macpherson St (next to the restaurant on the corner of Lugar St ). But don’t go yet, they won’t have any more in until late in the weekend. It doesn’t have all the buttermilk expressed, so it’s not impossible to spread, but as a result sometimes when you are scraping some up it will squirt at you! Comes in 3 sizes, 300g (?), 500g & 1kg. It’s beautifully golden and breathtakingly expensive (the medium tub is about $13), but well worth it!

Also, just across Macpherson St to the left from Fruitgasm, you will find Australian Gourmet Meats. Their website http://www.agmeats.com.au/ is under construction. I had a look in their window a while ago, and recall that they do all sorts of unusual meats; I recall quail & kangaroo, and I think there was grass-fed beef too. Will have to go back for another look when it’s open. There’s another butcher on the opposite corner of Lugar St of the good old traditional variety, so maybe he might be worth a look too, what with Fruitgasm & another organic grocery near neighbours, and Australian Gourmet Meats a stone’s throw away.

Also, I came across a water purification shop in Cammeray the other day - they have under-sink and counter-top Reverse Osmosis water purifiers available (am ringing them tomorrow for the cost). If you aren’t familiar with water purification, the Reverse Osmosis type of filter is the only readily available type that will strip out that waste product of the aluminium industry that is put into our drinking water: Fluoride. Picture of the counter-top model is here: http://www.watershop.com.au/products/filters/counter/ro4000.html

I visited Australian Gourmet Meats a few weeks ago - it is fantastic. It is an awesome concept - you put on a jacket and walk into their coolroom & all their meat is cryvacked (if that is how you spell it!) It is great quality and about 2/3rds of the price that you normally need to pay. It looks nothing from the outside so you have to go in & rug up.
Gympie farm also make a goats milk cheese. Once you try this it is hard to go back to any other brand! It is expensive but worth every cent!

107. Hi Sophie,

Yes Gympie Farm butter is available from French’s Forest.. I got some on Sunday.. yummy! They also have a goats milk yoghurt.. they didn’t have any, but i intend to try some this Sunday when i go back to get some more butter.
In regards to pastuerisation, nothing really should be pasteurised as the clean handling practises from producers should negate the need in most instances for it to be carried out.. also, just because something is pasteurised doesn’t mean it cannot be contaminated by other pathogens.. In fact, without the natural enzymes.. bad handling practices can theoretically increase your risk.

108. Hi ys I went to Frenches Forest Markets too and luckily scored the last tub of cream, and 2nd last tub of butter, I was so happy!! hope to get some yoghurt next time. Its amazing how excitied i get over raw dairy!

109. Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get kangaroo tail in Sydney?

111. Hi Sarina,
I got all my Whey Healthier confiscated at Sydney Customs, so i suggest not to buy it from Mercola. He reinbursed me which was great of him, seeing as though he was not oblighed to. i also would like to know what other Whey here in Australia could measure up to it. Anyone have suggestions?

Hi Joy
I’m not sure what’s in Mercolas Whey Healthier, but one whey protein powder I use and reccomend is IsoWhey by Pharma Foods. It’s a practitioner only product in Australia, so you’ll need to find a health food store that has a naturopath or contact a local naturopath. It’s not cheap but is processed using a cold ion exchange process so the whey isn’t heated and denatured. Cheap and nasty whey powders are a by product of food manufacturing and are produced at high temps and spray dried. The high temps. denature the proteins making them impossible to digest.

Peter, thankyou thankyou thankyou for your tip off about Fruitgasm in Bronte stocking the Gympie farm butter. I live in Bronte and am just about to dash out and see if they have any in stock and if they don’t pre pay and order some. I can’t get to the Frenchs Forrest markets as I work Saturdays so finding someone who stocks it so close by is even better.

115. Hi Sarah, unfortunately Fruitgasm is out of Gympie farm butter. I’ve been asking them for the last 2-3 weeks and it’s due to the season - winter is approaching and cows are not lactating as much. To keep milk supply up, unfortunately butter production suffers as it requires only about a quarter of the milk -the cream part. Don’t know what happens to the part not used by buter production… would raw skim milk be saleable, I wonder? Raw milk drinkers would not want to forego the nutrient from the cream!

In a month or two we can expect raw milk to become less available too, as winter comes. I remember last year it was rationed out between customers to be fair. But that’s what slow food’s all about - seasonal production! Makes you appreciate beautiful vibrantly rich spring milk from fresh young pasture all the more.

116. Oh Sarah, Fruitgasm does have butter available, but all they have at the moment is the pasteurised kind. The brands they stock are usually organic, so at least that’s something.

117. Sarah, if you can get to Leichhardt.. the same people who have butter and cream are usually there too. It’s on each Saturday morning.

118. Just letting you know I visited Relish Organics at Mudgeraba on the Gold Coast the other day. It’s a great little shop and Luke was very helpful. I got the best and sweetest organic carrots we’ve had for ages !
Your site is great ! Recently we were able to help someone who was chasing raw milk in Melbourne by suggesting the places someone had listed here. Thanks, Anne

119. 121. Peter (with capital!)
Apr 14th, 2008 at 6:41 pm

Thanks for the Leichhardt butter news, Glenn, I’ll give them a try this weekend as I am getting really low on the lovely “Gympie Gold”!

Further to my comment on fluoride-removal from your drinking water, I found that the Reverse Osmosis counter-top unit is around the $400 mark. It should come with a 5-litre plastic tank to catch your filtered water - the filtration rate is a little slow, so you filter some in advance of when you need it. One thing that surprised me, never having encountered one of this type of filter before, is that there are *two* outlet hoses! One is white, and emits pure H2O. The other outlet hose is black, and from it comes impure water that contains stuff that didn’t make it through the RO membrane. Rather than letting that all wastefully run down the drain, you can get an old 3-litre fruit juice bottle or similar, and collect the “grey” water too and use it for something other than drinking.

I also found that Reverse-Osmosis fliters are not the only fluoride-removers at the Water Shop.. they also sell a distiller unit (don’t know the price). It’s much slower than the Reverse Osmosis process (5 to 6 hours for just 4 litres), but on the upside it seems you don’t need a connection to the water mains to run it. Conceivably if you can power it with electricity from your boat or caravan, you could even use it to purify seawater! More info here: http://www.watershop.com.au/products/filters/distiller/index.html

For anyone suffering from or worried about osteoporosis, cutting your fluoride intake is a significant consideration, as is drinking raw milk to benefit from the still-active calcium-binding phosphatase enzyme. Fluoride displaces calcium and phospate in your teeth and bones, which can’t be good for you. (Here’s a scientific article summary about it: http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/content~content=a784829914~db=jour~order=page )

120. Which is better raw cows milk or raw goats milk. I am sick and tired of drinking pasteurised milk and had raw goats milk i nthe past, did not enjy it very much, but would rather that than pasteurised milk any day, but I am awarwe that goats milk also lacks some of the vitamins that cows milk has. So anyone in the know and can give me lcear, unbiased information, please?

121. Its fascinating to learn about all food products available in Oz.I thought you guys were a nation of meat lovers, and didn’t realise that ozzies could be Vegans.

Does anyone know any good recipes for vegetarian BBQ dishes?

I got cous-cous, sweet potatoes, yam, aubergines, capsicum peppers, and paneer on kebab sticks.

Any other items and recipes gratefully received.

I would really, really like to find a place to buy certified organic liver and other glands, blood, bones, etc. I don’t even know where to begin searching! I’ve looked for hours online, but there’s almost no information whatsoever. I see these ingredients metioned in a lot of articles on this site, but how do you actually obtain them? They have to be organic, pasture fed and safe to consume. Please, can anyone help me? I live in Chatswood, Sydney (Northern Sydney area). I’m desperate because I have no experience of buying meat. I hope someone could reply soon.

123. Hi Husky Bear, you should be able to buy certified organic liver from any good health food shop. Try Macro in Sydney. If they sell organic meats, then they should sell organic liver and if not, ask them to order it for you. There is also MGM grass fed meats and Alaringa organic meats. Both companies do deliveries. There must be certified organic butchers in Sydney. Good luck!

i’m visiting melbourne from july - october and am trying to track down a good organic grocer and a **kombucha beverage** dealer. (I won’t really have the ability to make my own kombucha). I’m staying in the Richmond area near Bridge Rd. Thanks so much!

125. Macro wholefoods is right on bridge rd. They stock all organic stuff but not raw milk. there is a commerical brand of kombucha that they most likely stock but i havent tried it myself. There are heaps of other good stores and markets in Melb + the queen vic market have an organic section.

126. Macro is on bridge road, they have a big variety of stuff and can get most products in if you have the time.
Im pretty sure I have seen some kombucha there before.
Not too far from bridge road, next to the collingwood childrens farm just off johnstone st there are fortnightly farmers markets and slow food markets, and its beautiful there. Ive yet to check out the farmers market but its a pretty spot to visit regardless.

127. Hi Just Visiting

Try the Queen Victoria markets, organic section, we recommend Karen at Garden Organics. For excellent baked goods, try Made a Mano in Gertrude Street near Smith Street in Fitzroy - best organic chocolate brownies going! Ask for Mario - also great organic pizza every Saturday morning.

128. Yes to Louise,

Be careful importing Whey Healthier from Mercola. Mine was confiscated at Sydney Customs, fortuneatly Mercola gave me full compensation. He didn’t have to, pretty decent of him. So be careful, u may be lucky, but then again u may not

129. I am responding to Ann, who wrote back in January for a good organic produce supplier who delivers, for Ipswich and the Brisbane area. I know you will already be underway with your organic produce but if your not satisfied and for anyone else who is interested, I use Farm Fresh Organics. Their produce is fantastic, always super fresh, and they have some other hard to find products which I need from Sally Fallon’s Nourishing Traditions. I have used a number of other organic produce people who deliver and they have been inferior in quality to Farm Fresh Organics produce. Its not cheap but well worth it. Their service is also fantastic.

While I am here, does anyone know if raw dairy products (as in butter, cheese, yoghurt and cream) are sold at Powerhouse Farmer Markets? I have been trying to source these for the last 6 months without success. If not, does anyone know a good substitute in the Brisbane area? Thanks for help.

130. Hi, I’m looking for good sources of organic grass-fed dairy and meats around Byron Bay/ Mullumbimby area. especially the butter and organ meats, I keep reading about Gympie butter, is that available here? I see Savvy Organics butter in the stores, is that grass-fed? Any tips would me much appreciated :)

131. Hi Majik, The best place for grass fed, well-loved animals is via the Byron and Bangalow Farmers market. Ocean Shores has some buffalo I’m told but I haven’t met the butcher and given the 3rd degree yet. I can highly recommend the meat from the Hayter’s Hill boys at the markets. Their Chipolata sausages are a win for kiddies and they include free range pork from another local farmer. I’ve met these pigs and I’m and totally happy that they are happy as pigs in mud, cause they are pigs in mud. They get lots of sunshine, eat heaps of macadamias, sweet potatoes and green grass and they’re allowed to fallow in the brambles (homebirthed piggies). Their farmer husbands them with total respect. One problem with the Hayter’s Hill boys, they don’t have any organ meats. There’s some arrangement with the processor in which they pay in organs. Please nag them with me though. They are well aware of the Weston A Price foundation and farm their animals in the Joel Salatin style. They are fourth generation farmers and really love their life. If only they could slaughter on site and give me their guts too. For organs, the best I can say is Matthew from Sunforest turkey - at the markets too - has turkey liver. Delicious as a pate and kids love it. Other than that, try Wholly Smoked for organs. BTW Sunforest does turkey, chicken necks and frames for broths - very important part of the WAPF recommendations. See you at the markets Majik.

132. Thanks so much for the reply :)
I’ve never made a bone broth before, nor have I eaten organ meats, but I’m about to dive headlong into it!
Do any of those farmers at the market have butter?
I’ll definitely see you there; I’m the one wearing green ;)

133. No butter but hopefully herdshare.com will be up and running soon and you’ll be able to get butter, cream and milk shared through the local markets ALL OVER OZ!

134. Thanks again,
about the butter, I saw a new product in the Santos in Mullum; b-d paris creek biodynamic butter. I emailed them and asked if it’s from grass-fed cows and here’s the answer I got:
Our cows graze all day on the paddocks, on green feed and if this is not enough they are fed meadows hay, which we cut from our own farm. At milking times they are feed a handful of pure grain which is biodynamic or organically grown and certified.
It sounds like a good one :) their website is:
http://www.bdfarmpariscreek.com.au

135. Hi there all. Can anyone recommend a brand(s) of good quality organic butter from pasture fed cows? I am located in south-east suburbs of Melbourne and am having difficulty finding it. Also, is there any difference between “organic” butter and “pasture-fed” butter? Does “organic” mean “pasture-fed” and vice versa? I have read that although the milk is organic the cow may still have been fed a diet high in grains. Thanks in advance for your help!! Love this web site :-)

136. Hi DMF,

In the Melbourne area you blessed to have ready access to the Aphrodite Dairy products. The products include bath milk, body butter and cream - all freshly produced in Gippsland, and available throughout the Melbourne area.

Aphrodite Bath Milk is 100% organic unpasturised jersey milk, from grass fed cows. The farm has been organically certified with BFA for the past 10 years, and has its own water supply and green pastures. The factory where the cream and butter are produced is spotlessly clean and registered with Food Safe Victoria.

You can find the list of shops carrying the Aphrodite products on the website at http://www.aphroditedairy.com.
You wish to phone ahead to find out the weekly delivery times, as there is a strong demand for these premium products. Enjoy!!

Hi, the WA Chapter link seems to be broken. I’m looking for an Australian grower/supplier of fresh young/green coconuts. All the ones I’ve seen have been imported from Thailand and are mouldy/not that fresh (perhaps because of the extra transit time to get to Perth?). Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks heaps.

138. Hello everyone!
I’m wondering if someone can help me with an updated source of raw dairy products in Sydney (I think I read there was some sort of crack down on the raw cheese people at various markets?)
I live in the Penrith region, but am willing to travel to the eastern suburbs every now and again to buy in bulk lots. I already have sourced raw goats milk and raw cows milk, but am very interested in raw butter, raw cheese (any sort), raw yoghurt… and less importantly, raw creme fraiche and raw ice cream - if such a thing exists, without added sugar except the natural sugar in the fruit.
A little list of Sydney places stocking these products as of Oct 08 would be very much appreciated!

A new WAPer in conversion,
Cole
